Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
The aim of this paper, from the empirical standpoint, was to analyze the effects of central bank independence (CBI) on inflation and GDP growth, based on a sample of 19 countries from Eastern and Southeastern Europe, in the period from 2001 to 2013. A legal CBI index, as well as a turnover rate of central bank governors, were used as proxies for central bank independence. A panel regression analysis confirmed a negative relationship between CBI and inflation, which persisted even after controlling for time fixed effects and other variables. The relationship between CBI and growth turned out to be positive, however only after controlling for time fixed effects. Meanwhile, the turnover rate of governors did not significantly influence growth. In conclusion, CBI had a positive effect on economic trends among the observed countries.
