Defining the divisions and types of alternative assets, it can be said that the first forms of alternative assets appeared as early as 1949 in the form of hedge funds, which, together with other forms, became an increasingly common way of investing in world markets. They are also the most represented category of alternative investments. In this paper, in addition to the explanation of hedge funds, some subtypes of this fund, as well as their common characteristics and differences, are highlighted. In addition to this form of alternative investments, cryptocurrencies are also appearing in the world, which today have a great importance in the world markets. The most relevant among the aforementioned is Bitcoin, which was put into use in 2009 and since then is the first example of a cryptocurrency that is widely represented in the world and for which interest is growing day by day. It is a digital currency that enables transactions within its own infrastructures. The representation of this cryptocurrency is the largest in Latin America, and the Paper presents an overview of its representation in Croatia, for which the interest today is almost the same as for stocks.
