The issue of his work is focused on the emigration of the young workforce, where unemployment is considered the main reason. Croatia`s entry into the EU has led to a gradual decrease in unemployment, but the intensity of another pressing problem, namely emigration, has increased. Croatia is a country of emigration, which has recorded a negative migration balance for the last ten years. Ever since the 1880s, Croatia has faced several waves of migration, which displaced Croats all over the world. The latest migration wave started with the global financial crisis in 2008, and its intensity increased with Croatia`s entry into the European Union in 2013, when migration movements were mostly oriented towards Germany, Austria and Ireland. The young workforce is the most vulnerable in this situation, because most of them do not find employment in their profession after completing their education, regardless of whether it is a high school or university education. In the list of European Union members, Croatia ranks tenth in youth unemployment rates with an unemployment rate of 15.9%. Between the two most recent population censuses, which were conducted in 2011 and 2021, the population of Croatia decreased by 395.360 inhabitants, and no county in Croatia recorded an increase in population in the observed period. Although Croatia records a certain inflow of population every year, these figures are not enough to compensate for the number of emigrants.
