The first part of the paper explores the development of the Common Agricultural Policy, with a focus on the second reform, Agenda 2000, which introduces rural development as the second pillar of policy. This LEADER approach involves local communities in issues related to the development of their areas. Furthermore, the work introduces us to the concept, role and development of local action groups which conduct LEADER approaches in the rural development process. In the second part, an analysis of the success of local action groups was carried out by investigating the impact of several variables on the amount of support that each LAG retired. The main reason for the success of the LAGs through analyzing the influence of the selected variables is that even though rural areas are affected by the same problems (leaving the youth, poor infrastructure, extinction of the agriculture sector etc.), not all local groups are equally successful in withdrawing funds. So the questions is what is the reason for that. The results show a significant impact on the number of members and share of the public sector in membership on the amount of aid per capita. On the other hand, the variables of the share of employed in the total population, the share of employees in agriculture, as well as the absorption capacity of cities and municipalities have not proved to be significant in the model.
