The concept of sustainable development has gone through many developmental stages since its introduction. Various organizations and institutions have participated in the historical development of the concept, and today they are working intensively on the implementation of its principles and goals. Tourism has long been recognized as a key tool for fostering economic development and growth. However, in recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the negative outcomes of unsustainable tourism growth and development principles, as well as the unhealthy addictions and marginalization that have arisen as a result. This has brought the phenomenon of responsible economic growth to the forefront towards achieving sustainability. Therefore, the contribution to achieving the goals of sustainable development (SDGs) through tourism at the national and international level is the main guideline for the future. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by all United Nations member states in 2015, provides a common plan for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and in the future. The Sustainable Development Goals aim to stimulate action over the next fifteen years in areas of critical importance to humanity and the planet. The analyzed document at the Croatian level "Tourism Development Strategy until 2020" represents a comprehensive understanding of the key directions of Croatian tourism development and it can be concluded that the Republic of Croatia is focused on achieving sustainable tourism development, although there is still much room for improvement. The EU and following sustainable development goals, the Republic of Croatia can make even more significant progress towards sustainability in the future.
