Carrying capacity concept in tourism occurs parallel with the growing concern about the negative impacts of tourism. Initial discussions of the concept aspired to establish a fixed value above which destination or sight is degraded. That kind of approach encountered numerous shortcomings and consequently criticism. Regarding the current affirmation of the concept, it is still relevant but for quality application it is necessary to consider a number of factors. Among the most important ones are the impact on environment, local community and the economy. Besides that it is crucial to monitor trends in tourism and according to them adjust the application of the concept. By including carrying capacities in tourism strategic plan, it can be said that the destination strives for sustainable tourism. It minimizes the negative consequences of tourism or if done in time prevents them from happening at all. For this reason it is necessary to continue working on this concept and combine it with other managing techniques. The result of a good study and implementation is a satisfied local community and visitors. The methodology used in writing the paper is the so-called grounded theory approach that analyzes relevant scientific papers that have contributed to the topic of carrying capacity. The aim of the paper was to create an insight into the mentioned topic and to expand the already existing knowledge through theoretical considerations but also examples from practice. Emphasis is placed on the evolution of the concept over time, the way it is applied, and the critiques it most often encounters.
